Horizon Journal Co.
“How might a designed experience empower study abroad students to engage with cultural differences, document their growth, and share their journey?”
My BFA capstone project investigates how intentional design can support personal growth and cultural awareness during study abroad experiences. Guided by the research question above, I conducted interviews, self-ethnography, and competitive analysis to uncover gaps in reflective tools for students abroad. In response, I designed a student-centered physical reflection journal that offers structure, inspiration, and space for meaningful self-discovery — something I wish I had while I was abroad.
Pictured above is my final project displayed in the 2025 BFA Capstone Exhibition at Miami University for a week-long interactive gallery showing of my class’s design research projects for our Communication Design program.
For the gallery, I carefully printed and handcrafted the final Horizon Journal using the French link stitch method of bookbinding, a leather-like fabric for the cover, and a thicker 30-lb printer paper for a more professional feel.
Project Brief
Introduction & Approach to Research
Studying abroad is a transformative experience that challenges students to step outside their comfort zones, adapt to new cultures, and grow both personally and academically. However, while universities provide logistical support and pre-departure resources, there is a lack of structured guidance to help students actively reflect on their experiences during and after their time abroad. Without intentional reflection, many students struggle to process cultural challenges, recognize their personal growth, or articulate the impact of their journey in meaningful ways. I hope to design a unique solution by creating an engaging and accessible way for students to reflect on their experiences. This project seeks to develop a student-centered reflection guide that encourages deeper cultural awareness, personal insight, and post-travel adjustment. By integrating interactive prompts and creative storytelling elements, this guide will help students document their journey, navigate cultural shifts, and carry their experiences forward in a way that enriches their personal and professional lives.
Methods
For my project, I used methods triangulation to develop a comprehensive understanding of my research topic.
Interviews
I interviewed 8 study abroad students and a global initiatives advisor to identify gaps in reflective guidance before, during, and after the experience.
Opportunity for Design
My challenge is to design a reflective experience that empowers study abroad students to meaningfully engage with their host country's culture. Potential deliverables include a physical reflection journal, mobile app, and interactive reflection cards.
Key Insights
I utilized affinity mapping to identify key insights from my research.
Culture shock requires ongoing support
Students face both culture shock abroad and reverse culture shock upon returning home, highlighting the need for consistent support to navigate these emotional transitions.
Self-Ethnography
I analyzed my experiences to identify gaps in reflective practices during and after my study abroad experience to enhance personal growth and engagement.
Reflective practices are often overlooked
Many students lack structured opportunities for reflection, leading to missed chances for deeper personal growth and understanding of their experiences.
Competitive Analysis
I analyzed travel guide competitors to identify effective strategies and content themes that could better support reflection for study abroad students.
Sharing experiences enhances growth
Sharing their experiences with peers or alumni helps students process emotions, gain new perspectives, and better understand the lasting impact of their journey.
Audience Benefit
This reflective experience will help study abroad students capture their journey, document their learning, and create a lasting record of their growth, empowering them to apply new perspectives to their future personal and professional life.
